Planning A Family Bike Ride Along The Canal

Why Canals Are Made For Family Cycling
Ask any parent who has wrestled a reluctant seven-year-old up a Pennine hill and they will tell you the same thing: flat is your friend. Canal towpaths across Cheshire and Trafford are almost entirely level, which means the whole family can cycle at a similar pace without anyone being left behind on a climb. The gradients that make the Cheshire lanes so pretty are exactly what you want to avoid with a trailer, a tag-along or a child on their first proper bike.
There is also something quietly brilliant about the water itself. Children who would moan about a walk to the shops become surprisingly keen when there are ducks, herons, narrowboats and the occasional kingfisher to spot. Progress is slow but the complaints are few. Add a flask and a bag of sandwiches and you have a full day out for the price of a bit of planning.
Choosing A Route That Suits Your Youngest Rider
A good rule of thumb is one mile per year of age for the youngest cyclist, then halve it if the towpath is muddy or the weather is warm. A confident eight-year-old will manage eight to ten miles comfortably with stops; a five-year-old on a balance bike or in a seat will be done after three.
- Sale and Stretford stretches of the Bridgewater Canal offer wide, mostly firm towpaths, easy access from residential streets and plenty of benches for breaks.
- Lymm and Grappenhall combine a gentle towpath with a village at either end, so you can build in an ice cream stop as a reward.
- The Trent & Mersey around Lymm and Preston Brook gives more of a countryside feel without any real climbing.
- Macclesfield Canal near Bosley and Congleton rewards slightly older children with lock flights to watch and woodland edges to explore.
- Ashton Canal towards Portland Basin is a good half-day option from the Trafford side, with heritage boatyards to peek at.
Do a short solo recce if you can. Towpath surfaces vary enormously within a few miles — some sections are smooth tarmac, others are compacted gravel that turns sticky after rain.
Kit, Bikes And The Basics That Save The Day
Check every bike the night before, not on the morning of the ride. Tyres pumped, brakes working, chains oiled and saddles at the right height. A saddle set too low is the single most common reason children tire quickly, because their knees never straighten properly.
Pack light but pack properly:
- Helmets for everyone, adults included. Children copy what they see.
- A basic repair kit — spare inner tube, tyre levers, small pump, and a multi-tool you actually know how to use.
- Water bottles on the bikes rather than in a rucksack, so children drink without stopping.
- Layers and a light waterproof each. Canal sides are shaded and noticeably cooler than the road.
- Snacks in easy reach. Hunger arrives suddenly and always halfway between two bridges.
- A small first aid kit with plasters and antiseptic wipes, plus sun cream in summer.
If you have a mix of abilities, consider a tag-along or a towbar for the youngest. It keeps the group together and gives a tired child the option to keep going rather than turn back.
Towpath Etiquette And Staying Safe Near Water
Towpaths are shared spaces and the rules are mostly about courtesy. Keep left where the path allows, slow right down at bridge holes and locks where sightlines are poor, and pass walkers and anglers at walking pace. A cheery "coming past on your right" does more good than a bell rung from six feet away.
Talk to children about water safety before you set off, not after. The message is simple: stop pedalling and get off the bike before the very edge, never lean over a lock gate, and stay behind the towpath edge on blind corners. Anglers deserve a wide berth and a quiet pass — their lines reach further than you think.
Watch for wet wooden decking on bridges and lock gates, which is genuinely slippery, and for the metal edges of lock gear. In winter, shaded sections can hold ice long after the roads have cleared.
Picnic Spots Worth Building A Ride Around
Half the pleasure of a canal ride is the stop. Look for locks with grass verges beside them, village greens a few minutes off the towpath, and canal-side benches with a wall behind them so small children cannot wander backwards towards the water.
- Lymm has open green space a short push from the canal, with room for a ball and a proper sit-down lunch.
- Dunham Massey area lanes connect nicely to the Bridgewater towpath for a picnic on the grass before heading home.
- Sale Water Park offers benches, toilets and space to run off the last of the energy before the ride back.
- Marple and Marple Locks give you a staircase of locks to watch boats work through while sandwiches are handed round.
Bring a bin bag. Towpath bins are sparse and nobody wants to be the family that left a trail of wrappers behind them.
Timing, Weather And Keeping Everyone Smiling
Morning starts beat afternoon starts almost every time, especially in summer. Towpaths get busy from late morning with walkers, anglers and other cyclists, and tired children cope far better in a quiet space.
Plan the ride so the outward leg is shorter than you think you need. Children who have used most of their energy getting somewhere will still have to get back, and a headwind on the return can turn a lovely morning into a long afternoon. Build in a proper stop of at least half an hour and let them get off the bikes completely.
Finally, keep a couple of games in reserve for the last mile: spotting boat names, counting herons, or guessing what is inside the next lock cottage. It is amazing how far a distraction carries a tired pair of legs. Canal cycling is not about distance — it is about everyone arriving home muddy, fed and asking when you can go again.
